Non-Profit Business Management
February 22-25

This class will cover a wide range of topics relevant to the managing a non-profit business including communications, governance, risk management, finances, and a basic business plan. This course will be held at Pyoca Camp, Retreat and Conference Center (Brownstown, IN) and will be taught by Dan Scheneman of Heartland Presbyterian Center (Parkville, MO) and Lauri SoJourner of Gravatt Camp and Conference Center (Aiken, SC). The Compass Points certification courses are designed specifically for current and future camp and conference leaders.

About the Instructors

Dan SchenemanDan Scheneman

Dan has spent over twenty-seven years in camp and conference ministry at Heartland Presbyterian Center in Parkville, Missouri. Dan grew-up spending his summers at Heartland Center first as a camper and then as a camp counselor. In 1993, Dan started as the Program Director for Heartland and was promoted to Executive Director in 2001. Dan and his wife, Jennifer, have three wonderful kids that keep them very busy.  Dan is a Presbyterian Elder, and served as the President of the PCCCA Board from 2008-2012. Dan enjoys visiting other camp and conference centers, family vacations, running, disc golf, and word games.

Lauri SoJournerLauri SoJourner

Since 2007, Lauri has served as the Executive Director of Gravatt Camp and Conference Center, a 270-acre Episcopal retreat center and summer camp located in Aiken, SC. She has served on the Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers Board since 2011 and currently serves as President. She earned her BA in English – Professional Communications and a Certificate of Nonprofit Management from Winthrop University. She earned her MA in Student Personnel Administration from Ball State University. Lauri lives on-site at Gravatt to serve the needs of guests and staff with her four children and a small zoo of animals.

Tuition, Lodging, Meals and Transportation

The tuition cost for this certification course is $250.00. The lodging/meals options are single occupancy ($235), double occupancy ($150), and quadruple occupancy ($110). This includes three nights in private bath bedroom accommodations and all of your meals (Sunday dinner through Wednesday lunch).

We would like to have all of the participants arrive at Pyoca by 5:00pm on Sunday. For those participants who will fly into the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on Sunday or Wednesday, there will be a shuttle leaving the airport at 4:00pm. Please plan your flights accordingly. If you are taking the shuttle back to the airport on Wednesday or Saturday, we ask that you schedule your departure no earlier than 3:00pm. The cost for the round-trip shuttle is just $35.

Registration for this course is available through Pyoca’s online system. When you are creating a profile, please select “Graduate” as your grade. If you are also registering for the second class, Development, please be sure to select the first option that includes the costs for both classes. If you have a roommate request, you will have the option to enter it. If not, just leave it blank. At the very end of the process, you will have the option to add the airport shuttle.

Development
February 25-28

The class will examine multiple aspects of development in the camp and conference setting. Learners will explore fund development as well as staff, volunteer, and board development. The class will conclude with study of a site, master, and strategic development plan. This course will be held at Pyoca Camp, Retreat and Conference Center (Brownstown, IN)  and will be taught by Scott Henderson of Meadowkirk (Middleburg, VA) and Mike Huber of Upper New York Annual Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries (Moravia, NY). Compass Points certification courses are designed specifically for current and future camp and conference leaders.

About the Instructors

Scott HendersonScott Henderson

Scott is the Executive Director/President of Meadowkirk, a independent, faith-based, nonprofit retreat center, originally founded by National Capital Presbytery, near Washington D.C. He has over 14 years of camp and retreat center experience. Scott has served on several nonprofit boards, is an instructor for Living Waters for the World and has held several leadership positions with camp, conference and retreat associations. Prior to his retreat center experience, Scott started and ran his own company and also served as a managing director for a corporate turnaround project.

Mike HuberMike Huber

Mike is the Executive Director of the Upper New York Annual Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries of the United Methodist Church which operates six centers. He grew up in Corning, NY, has a B.A. in Elementary Education from Bluffton College, and taught for six years in Springfield, Ohio. Mike is certified in Camp/Retreat Ministries in The United Methodist Church and has over 20 years of camp leadership experience. He and his wife, Kari have two children, Ethan and Sydney. Mike is a past chairperson of the National UMC Camp and Retreat Committee.
