Non-Profit Business Management

This course will cover a wide range of topics relevant to the managing a non-profit business including communications, governance, risk management, finances, and a basic business plan. This class will be taught by Dan Scheneman of Heartland Presbyterian Center (Kansas City, MO) and Susan Troutman of NovusWay Ministries (Arden, NC). The location for this course is to be announced, but it will be the same as the program below.

Development

The course will examine multiple aspects of development in the camp and conference setting. Learners will explore fund development as well as staff, volunteer, and board development. It will conclude with study of a site, master, and strategic development plan. This class will be taught by Scott Henderson of Meadowkirk at Delta Farm (Middleburg, VA) and Mike Huber of Upper New York Annual Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries (Moravia, NY). The location for this course is to be announced, but it will be the same as the program above.

About the Course

The focus of this class is Christian leadership, which is key to effective camp and conference ministry. Participants will explore staffing models that achieve both programmatic and mission goals.  An introduction into human resource issues and staff development will be covered.  This course is offered as a pre-event at the 2014 PCCCA Annual Conference at Heartland Presbyterian Center (Kansas City, Missouri) on November 9th-14th.

Curriculum/Teaching Team

Gary BattyGary Batty
In 2011, Gary retired after almost 29 years in camp and conference ministry. He served 7.5 years as V.P. of Operations and Program at Mo-Ranch Conference Center (Texas) and the previous 21 years as Executive Director of Stronghold Camp and Conference Center (Illinois). Gary has also completed 9 years of service on the Stony Point Center (New York) governing board. He has been a member of the PCCCA Consultants Network for 13 years and currently serves as a consultant for Run River Enterprises.

Bill BourdonBill Bourdon
Bill is the Executive Director of Blowing Rock Conference Center (BRCC) in Blowing Rock, NC. He is also a consultant with Richard K. Chamberlain & Associates, an international consulting firm working with camps and judicatories. For 23 years Bill served as part of the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ professional staff and administered the outdoor ministry and youth programs, with direct responsibility for their two sites. He serves on the board for the Outdoor Ministries Association of the United Church of Christ.

Tuition and Lodging

The tuition cost for this certification course is $235.00. Lodging and meals at Heartland Center during the pre-event will be $342 for single occupancy, $216 for double occupancy, or $174 for triple occupancy in hotel-style (private bath) accommodations. This cost includes lodging for three nights and nine meals (Thursday dinner through Sunday lunch). We would like to have all of the participants arrive at Heartland Center by 5:30pm (dinner is served at 6:00pm). A shuttle is available from the Kansas City International Airport (MCI) for just $10 round trip (either going back on Sunday or at the end of the Annual Conference). On Thursday the 6th, shuttles will be leaving the airport at 2:30 and 4:30pm. Please plan your flights accordingly. If you are taking the shuttle back to the airport on Sunday the 9th, we ask that you schedule your departure no earlier than 2:00pm.
